The process of this technique begins with annealing (heating) a copper tube in order to soften it. After hammering the ends and clamping the tube to a table, a dabbing punch set is used to create the craters and valleys in the metal. This processes work hardens the metal, and requires it to be annealed a number of times in order to soften the metal enough to continue shaping it. Once completed, the edges are smoothed and a liver of sulfur patina is applied, followed by a rough polish to remove the patina off the raised parts to create greater contrast between the rifts and valleys. After polishing the metal, protective wax is applied to reduce tarnishing.
